Singer songwriters are a genre of musicians who write and perform their own songs.

Some of the best singer songwriters of our times include Adele, Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran.

Singer songwriters tend to be more emotionally driven than other genres such as pop music or rap. The art of songwriting allows them to express their feelings through lyrics in a way that no one else can do for them.

Singer songwriters are often classed as a sub-genre of alternative music. However, this is not always the case. Some singer songwriters are considered folk artists and others may even be considered singer-songwriters who make pop music.

Abby K is a singer songwriter who has proven herself to be a thoughtful writer who incorporates real life subjects with heartfelt vocals.

We caught up with Abby K for an interview on her latest single ‘Carry the Weight’.

My latest single, “Carry the Weight” is a call to action. History repeats itself. Is anyone listening?

This song is dedicated to the thousands of civilians and children killed, those forced to leave their country for survival, and to the brave men and women fighting to protect their freedoms.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) verified a total of 5,996 civilian deaths during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as of September 25, 2022. Of them, 382 were children, 8,848 people injured. To date, this war has displaced nearly seven million people.

The music video for ‘Carry The Weight’ is a montage melding the present from the past and the desperate hope for the future.

Abby K draws upon many influences in her music from her childhood days in Kentucky and conveniently short-hands her music as “Heart-Rock”.

After two decades in the Windy City, where she was exposed to the extremes of weather and musical influences, she has moved her act to Seattle where she performs regularly, including Seattle’s NW Folk Life Festival in 2017 and 2019. So, when it all comes together, what do you get? Honesty. Clarity. Harmony. Beauty. Abby’s sound is as green, lush and dramatic as the Pacific Northwest. Her melodies are instantly hummable and imminently memorable, and her stories will hit you smack dab in the heart.

What was the moment you felt the need to compose this song?

When something happens that carries an emotional impact, I usually write to help process what I’m feeling.  The war in Ukraine hit me immediately.  After a few months of carrying its weight on my shoulders, I finally was able to write a necessary song depicting the long term magnitude of what’s really going on.

What, ultimately, do the verses of “Carry the Weight” say?

History repeats itself. Is anyone listening?

“Carry the Weight” tells the story from three different perspectives living in Ukraine while under attack: a mother with her child, an old man who is a Holocaust survivor, and a young Ukranian soldier.  The one thing they all carry in common, is the belief for their freedoms and their strength to defend it.

“But like times in the past, hate always comes back but falls in spite of its weight.  Lives will be lost, in vain senseless costs, but hope will carry the weight.”

5 Tips From Songwriter Abby K On Writing Songs With An Emotional Impact

  1. Go with the moment: When inspiration strikes, get the ideas and the emotions down. Abby K never sits on her ideas, she gets her ideas down on paper to give the ideas space to process.
  2. Write to help process what you’re feeling: “When something happens that carries an emotional impact, I usually write to help process what I’m feeling.  The war in Ukraine hit me immediately.  After a few months of carrying its weight on my shoulders, I finally was able to write a necessary song depicting the long term magnitude of what’s really going on.”

  4. Have a goal for your songwriting style: “As a songwriter, my goals are to open our eyes and consider humanity, people of all types with different points of view.”
  5. Become part of the conversation by speaking your truth: ” I changed. Not my viewpoints as my core values are the same as they have always been. But my voice changed and my empowerment to speak for the injustices dominating my surroundings. No topic felt off-limits with the concern of offending someone. Because NOT speaking out against wrong is the only crime committed. Complicitness. “
