Interviewing Matt & Steven

Music inspirations…
Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Pink Floyd. We would love to just sit in the room and absorb the knowledge of these musical greats, as well as to load them up with Uberphonics swag.

The music business is…
in a unique spot, on one hand it’s the easiest time to actually get your music out, but because there are so many avenues it can be difficult to actually get your music heard. The internet has really changed everything, the independent artist has lots of ways to present new music.

Head Trip…
It is about taking a trip throughout the consciousness of the mind. It was recorded at Straight Up Sound with the Legendary Johnny Neel using traditional and 3d recording techniques.

The Music…
Weirdness, syncopation, grooves, and jams. You can expect an excursion in sound allowing the listener the ability to illustrate the story within their own mind, with Uber providing the soundtrack.

You can expect to go on a musical journey with this album. Songs flow into each other creating a sense of an album meant to be listened to in one sitting. We recorded this album in binaural 3d audio using special microphones as well as puppetry techniques. This creates a sense of movement and 3 dimensions when listening through headphones. You can hear this technique on the beginning of Head Trip.

What sounds like traditional panning, we actually moved the microphone from side to side to get the “movement” from the left to the right in the speakers. What is great about this technique is that you can achieve a field of sound that is not possible through left right panning. In addition to movement of left and right, throughout the album you can head sounds in the front , behind, far away , and close up to the listener.

Nashville…
It is a very competitive place to live. There are phenomenal musicians and cool venues always somewhere to go to hear live music. It’s great to live in a place where there are so many top notch musicians because the best way to improve is to immerse yourself with musicians better than you are.

The Pros…
are we have been able to travel all over the country to places that we probably would never have been to and met a wide variety of very unique individuals.

The Cons…
are that it can be hard to find steady work playing for a living, but persistence is key to success in this industry.

We think there is a time and place for both. Generally we think that with our music an album is a cooler idea because you can give the listener an emotional “ride” with ups and downs.

A single can sometimes promote a band to sound a certain way, and we strive to have diversity within our albums. Our songs can be very different from one another and having them all recorded as an album gives us a chance to show the variety.
We can reach people who may have never heard of us, or reach people who have seen us live and want more of the Uber!! We have started an audio blog called “ Psychedelic SoundLab” that is a moment of improvisation that is captured on the spot without knowing where things will lead, This is showing the true genesis of how our songs are created, bringing the listener right into the writing experience.

Really for us we study musical masters of the past. Todays music doesn’t offer as much richness for us to really get into.

The Challenge…
Allowing ourselves to accept the struggles and harness the energy into motivation to work harder and be better. The struggle can become the triumph.

Music offers an alternate path to life, finding what is really important to one self makes a musician that much better.

When we are out on the road we are free from the 9-5 grind and it really offers the opportunity to be yourself in your own way. It is very eye opening to see how trapped in the grind a lot of people are, it is very special to be able to break out of that vibe.
