The music business
is a necessary evil. It has to coexist with the artists, just make sure that you are smart about your business and keep creative control over your projects.

I have seen many sides to the music game…
from being an artist in waiting (not signed to the label but part of the signed group’s entourage, singing backgrounds while waiting on my turn) with Blackground Records, Aaliyah’s label and subsidiary of Universal. I was right in the mix of the fame and the glory and then I saw the dark side, artists being shelved, dropped and left out in the cold. I have grown from all my experiences, most have been fairly harsh but in this biz if you don’t have thick skin… well, you are in the wrong line of work.

I feel that both singles and albums are necessary...
The catalog should be ongoing with the best 12 selected for the release and the best 3 of those selected as singles. I also believe in promo music to create the initial buzz, hence Reverbnation and other free music sites to bring a fanbase to you. Marketing (without a budget in my case) is a difficult road for either but if you hustle and grind and treat the process professionally with the laser focus, you can achieve great things through social media and word of mouth alongside performances and networking.

I love the platform that social media provides...
I sometimes get impatient with the slow, painful process of staying relevant, cutting edge and iconic but the journey is why I do this.

I would love 5 minutes alone with Stevie Wonder
because he is a musical genius and I would learn all that I could soak in, talk passion and spend the last minute singing together.

There is always too much emphasis on current and trendy...
The key is to know yourself, know what makes you unique and special, while being realistic about what level of success you are going to achieve, at some point there is always a slight conformity to please a larger market, sell more records, create additional opportunities etc. I know my lane, I know what I do better than anyone else and I know my weaknesses more importantly, that’s where the growth comes from, the elevation of your art form.

If you have no confidence in self…
you are twice defeated in the race of life, with confidence you have won before you started – Marcus Garvey

REVIEW:
HEATH “A.M.” MARTIN IS DESCRIBED AS DAVE HOLLISTER:
MEETS JOE AND R KELLY WITH A LITTLE AARON HALL, ANTHONY HAMILTON AND A SIDE OF GRITS N CORNBREAD… IN OTHER WORDS, A.M. HAS A UNIQUE BLEND OF MANY INFLUENCES TOPPED WITH HIS OWN STYLE CRAFTED THROUGH TRIALS AND STREET HUSTLE. THE PAIN AND SUFFERING OF A.M.’S PAST IS ALSO APPARENT IN HIS STYLE, GIVING THAT EDGY SOUND IT’S OWN LIFE FORCE, THUS CREATING REAL LIFE – MUSIC….. “Vintage” coming soon!

“I have been blessed in my life to work with and be mentored
by some of the legends of the game as well as many of my heroes. From H-Town, Silk, Jodeci, SHAI, Playa and BoyzllMen to Aaliyah and countless others but this is MY time… Real music is back”

My stage name is A.M..
this stands for my last 2 initials as well as my drive (first up in the am and last to sleep)
I know this answer may be a bit cliché but I have been singing since I could form words. It used to get on my siblings nerves but they learned to appreciate it over the years. Music was the best form of self-expression for a kid that never quite fit in and often dealt with depression.

Without You…

This record is based in some fact and some fiction like most records.
It’s about a man that has been sorely mistreated and stepped out on, so he finds happiness in other places, namely his ex’s best friend. B Che Blaq (also the producer) and Jay Dot, both amazing artists in their own right. We were at Che’s and we were vibin to the track and it just flowed out from there. Oftentimes when we get together, the artistry pours out like water.

My music is a throwback to…
the real RnB of the 90’s with passion, love, pain and some fun. The EP is just an intro into my world with racy songs like “Sextoy” and “Text Me” produced by former H-Town (RnB legends) producer A-Flat and “How do You Like it” featuring my besties Che Blaq and Jay Dot. There is a collection of Love, Sex, Pain and hope all on this 5 song EP.

I currently reside in Bonney Lake, WA
just 30 miles south of Seattle. Seattle is chalked full of nuggets from great talent to the venues. The issue in the NW is the lack of support for this genre of music… not a ton of real RnB heads out here so I take my music to the people in different markets such as Dallas, LA, Houston, Atlanta, Chicago, NY and Florida via internet radio and whoever else will play Indie RnB. I love to travel, spend time with my family and do the Netflix n chill with wifey.
