The music business has totally changed in the last few decades for the better.
Artists have more power and control over their music now with the advent of social media as it’s way easier to get your music heard. Taking the power away from record labels is a good thing. In the past with my old band, I had shady individuals who tried to steal my self-owned record label and distribution deal, and I’ve had record labels record my music and not release it in the hopes that a major record label would buy the rights to my music so they could get a payday, so it’s very hard to trust these scoundrels that are involved in the music industry. But you live and learn, and now I’m just being happy to make music and have control over what I decide to do with it.

It’s hard to say who I’d like 5 minutes with in terms of all those who have inspired me.
But I’d say John Lennon and Jerry Garcia. They were both such pure artistic souls and affected me in vastly different ways. I have always felt John Lennon has been guiding me in my musical life since I was 7 years old. I know he influences so many people, but I really feel a close connection with him and his message. The same goes for Jerry Garcia. He was a gentle soul who oozed music. The commonality of John and Jerry was that they both spread their messages of Peace and Love which is what I aspire to do in my life.

Take Me There

The song ‘Take Me There’ was written during a very creative period of time
for me when Luper Dupree was conceived after my old band Earfood disbanded and I embarked on my solo musical journey. My old band was very hard rocking alternative funky type of music, so when I ventured out on my own I was free to write songs in whatever type of genre I wanted. With the song ‘Take Me There’, I really tried to write a beautiful and meaningful song that would capture that feeling of being free to pursue all the beautiful and magical things life has to offer. And I really wanted to keep it simple during the recording process in hopes that the song lyrics would be more powerful, it’s just me playing my acoustic guitar and a drum track and minimal vocal overdubbing.

The album ‘LD in LA’ by Luper Dupree is not just another album.
It’s also a soundtrack for my recently completed novel “Luper Dupree: Love My Crohn’s Disease” which chronicles my life in the celebrity artist culture of Los Angeles and dealing with my illness of Crohn’s Disease which I was diagnosed as an adolescent, and have endured 3 resections of my small bowel and countless hospital stays, and my being fortunate to still be alive. The book covers a 3 year period when Luper Dupree was born and the fascinating experiences during that time involving numerous celebrities, artists, and musicians in my social circle, culminating in very tragic circumstances for some of my friends and acquaintances. But through all my pain and tragedy, my overall message in the novel and music remains positive and hopeful. That is what I hope readers and listeners come away with from my art, that no matter what obstacles, grief, or sorrow life may present, and as difficult as it may be, we should always try to remain optimistic. I often feel that my purpose in life is not just about my music or writing, but being an example or role model for all the millions of people out there living and suffering with Crohn’s Disease.
