GETTING TO KNOW SANDRA MACAT BAND

Doug: I’ve had virtually no contact with the music business per se.
I’ve just played in some bands over the years – some good, some not so good. I played with a singer/songwriter named Natalie Wattre for a while for a few years ago. She was in a band called The Extinct that was pretty popular around here in the ‘90s, and has a couple solo CDs out. So that’s as close as I’ve come to the music business. Other than that, for all the years I’ve been playing, this is the first band that I’ve been in that’s really tried to do more than just play a few bars and parties. We’re pretty serious about this. Maybe a little OCD. Heh.
(Sandra) I’d love to spend 5 minutes with Linda Rondstadt,
although I don’t think 5 minutes is nearly enough. I’d love to hear all about her early days singing with The Stone Ponies and even the influence that her Mexican American Heritage provided to her. I’m from Vienna Austria originally and I love to see how culture shapes music.

But I think we have some better ones now, we just haven’t recorded them yet.
Doug: Not much of a back story, really.
It started out with the first line. Seems like most of the songs I’ve written start out that way. It just popped into my head, when I was heading into the restroom at work. Not sure what that means. I grew up in Chicago and met a kid once from Muncie, but otherwise, I don’t know anything about the place, or remember much about the kid, except the way she pronounced it. Muuuncie. So the song’s not really in any way autobiographical. But I guess if it’s about anything, it’s about fooling yourself into thinking you’re out of the woods, only to find out you’re really not. That you may think you’re over something, past it, but it can still come back to haunt you. And I suppose maybe, sometimes having to accept some things as they are.
Sandra: I feel like this song is speaking about the saying, “Wherever you go, there you are”.
So you can travel from Muncie, Tallahassee, New Orleans, end up in California and go back again… And your wounds and heartache will follow you.
Doug: We hope to record at least a couple more songs –
enough for an EP along with the 3 we have recorded – after the first of the year.
Sandra: Hahaha, actually we have about 10 songs that we love and can’t wait to record!
We feel we have a really pure Americana sound, that were very proud of.
Doug: We’re located in Los Angeles.
There are tons of musicians, and tons of bands and tons of venues here, but even though I’ve lived here since 1987, I can’t honestly say that I really know much about the inner workings of the music scene here. I do know that that there’s a pay to play system in many of the clubs in Hollywood that was already in place when I arrived, and that I’m not a fan of it. I know that it can be possible to scratch out a living here as a working musician if you’re really talented, and work really hard, and a few people can be pretty successful at it. I’m pretty sure people still come here with high hopes, and some of those hopes are fulfilled, and some aren’t. But I can’t really speak as an insider of the music scene.
