I believe in duality and that it can apply to many things, including relationships. That said, the saying ‘There are two sides to a coin’, comes to mind and to go even deeper – sometimes both exist at the same time. Good and Bad, Peace and War, Up and Down.

How do you stay focused and balance creating with life..
I’ve bee blessed and fortunate that I’m at a particular point in life that is finally a little less complicated. Although life still has its challenges, I’m on the other side of raising a family, and having a traditional career. As an empty nester and widow, I’ve recently turned all of my entrepreneurial efforts into my latest endeavor – which is my music. I’ve been focused full time on writing recording, and producing my music and music videos. Of course I’m by no means saying that it’s been easy, I’m just saying that it’s easier to focus and stay balanced on my music at this particular point in my life.

What piece of music advice forever changed your way of thinking…
The advice to ‘not be afraid to speak (write and sing) my own truth’ – is what I still keep at the forefront prior to every song I produce. Music is subjective, so it’s best not to try and please everyone at the risk of holding back, or altering the creative flow that’s inspired from within.

Song: NO EMOJI
Music Genre:: Pop-Reggae Fusion

This song is about…

NO EMOJI is about our modern times and how we often use emojis to describe how we feel.  As emojis are now so prevalent in almost all of our communications with one another, I felt pulled to create a song about it.

The song was born from the emotions I was feeling about a particular person that affected me in such a way, that there were just ‘No Emojis’ (or words) that could describe just how that particular someone made me feel. In my case, this particular person made me feels as though I could never quite relax or feel safe. I was always waiting for the next shoe to drop.

I purposely wrote this song, however, in such a way that it could be construed as either good or bad. I believe in duality and that it can apply to many things, including relationships. That said, the saying ‘There are two sides to a coin’, comes to mind and to go even deeper – sometimes both exist at the same time. Good and Bad, Peace and War, Up and Down.

My music is…
Although most of my music is reggae-rooted, I consider my music as a Pop-Reggae Fusion mix, which crosses over into many different genres. My music style has been described as fresh and original, and I was recently very flattered when described by a radio show hosts as a ‘Reggae Sade’. I grew up in an interracial household, with a Jamaican Chinese father, and African American mother, and was raised in the 60’s and 70’s in Detroit, where Motown originated and in the great Classic Rock era … so my musical taste is very eclectic, and my music encompasses a little mix of flavors as well.

I write from the heart and from my own life experiences, as I’m certain most artists do, and I started writing my own music as a personal healing process. Music was such a huge influencer for me, and so many of my favorite songs still resonate with me to this day. My hope is that my music will not only be widely received, but that it wall also resonate with it’s listeners in a meaningful, healing, and thought provoking way as well.

How do you think this release represents your current direction..
No Emoji, which is my most recent single and included on my debut EP: Gia Yee – is musically representative of the more definitively pop fusion mix within the reggae rooted vibes. Although lyrically my aim is to evoke conscious thought, like most reggae music is … No Emoji, was a definite move to put a contemporary and original twist a timeless rhythm and theme. I’m in the process of recording my new album now, and almost all of my new songs – although still reggae-rooted – seem to be going in that same direction.

Where do you create your music..
Although I created all of my music here at my home in Florida, and currently record here as well, I recorded my first 2 singles, QUENCH THE FEAR, and ONE HEART, at Tuff Gong International Studios in Kingston, Jamaica.

I live in…
I live in the Tampa Bay/Clearwater area of Florida, and the music scene here is very lively and diverse. There is a nice cultural mix in the Tampa area, with many music venues – from large amphitheaters and festivals, to small cozy pubs and beach bars with live music on a regular basis. There’s a large Latin scene, as well as country, jazz, rock, EDM, and Caribbean music in some pockets of town.
