GETTING TO KNOW LEIGH SUTHERLAND
by Jacqueline Jax host of A.V.A Live Radio
Maker of Noise
As a musician you always come back to the sound you originally grew up with. I’m currently working on more music and also developing out my own studio. Can’t wait to get all the equipment together for my own needs and to help out with other musicians looking for quality productions.
The music…
My music can best be described as pop rock, layered with electric and acoustic guitars, piano, and strong beats. It is hooky, original, and infused with positivity. I perform every instrument including guitar, bass, piano, drums, and vocals. You can expect to fell a positive and uplifting vibe from my music as most of my songs are inspired by my life’s experience which as a whole, are exciting and enjoyable ones. I have written a lot on my music while travel around the world in new and adventures circumstances.
Music business…
The music scene has changed dramatically even in my short time in the industry. I think these days you can have potentially more success if your savvy enough to get stuck into the online marketing that is now available on the world-wide web. You can spread your music far and wide and don’t need to be a computer or marketing wiz to do it! You just need to be motivated! Easier said than done to sit behind the computer and not your instrument. In saying that though, with the ease of online exposure there’s more music than ever to compete against.
I have also noticed a change in the popular music genres. In recent years at top music award shows here in New Zealand and Australia, like the Grammys but smaller! A lot of the top winning artists have been of an electronic nature and not so many instrument bands. I think the electronic technology is potentially easier to make music and opening it up to everyone. (I like a lot of this music, so not trying to burn anyone here!)
Let It Go…
is about looking at the lighter side of life and not getting to caught up in what other people are doing or what other people expect you should be doing. To just let yourself enjoy the simple pleasures in life and not to put too much pressure on yourself to accomplish everything at once, but to let the journey of life lay its natural course.
Let it Go was originally recording by myself in my home studio. Once I was happy with the structure and different instrument arrangements I booked into Cornucopia Music Productions and re-recorded everything professionally. Plus, I love being in the studio and always look forward to bringing a song to life one layer at a time.
I would love to have 5 minutes alone with Keith Moon…
I have always been a huge fan of the ‘Who’ thanks to my dad who was also rocking out in bands back in the day. Keith Moon was such an energetic and expressive drummer. Certainly not a drummer just hiding up the back. He had a huge personality and influence over the band’s sound and vibe, even though sometimes he over-cooked it and fell off his drum throne!
I am also a very expressive drummer like Keith and let it all my passion and feeling out through the instrument. I get such a thrill from playing, especially live or jamming in the moment and having the instinct to change chords, verse, beats without looking or talking to one another.
Reading some of the who’s and Pete Townsend books, Keith was always referred as an absolute prankster, life of the party dude. I think to catch up with him would be off the hook!
