GETTING TO KNOW ANNIE & KATE BROGDON
by Jacqueline Jax host of A.V.A Live Radio
The music business has been both a great experience and a tough lesson for us.
We have been in music for most of our lives, and performing for a good part of that time. Some of the greatest life lessons we’ve learned have come from being in music. Professionalism, humility and collaboration are all values our music teacher stressed heavily. We feel those things haveallowed us to be able to perform in some great venues and work with some wonderful musicians and now friends. Some of the cons we have faced include the challenge of being young and not taken as seriously as older musicians, gender stereotyping in our musical abilities, and dealing
with the competitive music environment in the Austin area.
Because we’re sisters and we harmonize a great deal in our songs,
we hear “you remind us of the band Heart” a lot. Our mom likes their music a lot, and we heard it often when we were growing up. Kate’s first solo song was “Barracuda”, Annie has named one of her guitars Nancy after Nancy Wilson, and we do a cover of “Straight On” in our shows. We saw them live a few years ago and loved the show! Getting to spend some time with them would be really cool!
“Strangers With Memories” is about dealing with moving on after broken friendships.
Sometimes when something goes wrong in a friendship, and perhaps each person has made mistakes but things aren’t right between them to reconcile, you just have to accept it and move forward. It’s about dealing with those feelings of anger in not being able to see each other’s point of view, and finally just saying ‘you know, maybe this isn’t going to work’, and then you become “strangers with memories”. Even though we are twins and have always performed together, we generally don’t write our songs in that way. “Strangers” is a song which was written by Kate, with some help on bass from Omar Vallejo, our music producer. at 512 Studios in Austin. It’s a song on our third album, THE STORM WITHIN, and we have been lucky to work with him and a fantastic team of musicians and sound engineers for all of our recordings. This time around in the studio, we had five songs to record in five days. “Strangers” was the last song we recorded that week, and it’s one of our favorites.
Strangers With Memories (Release date:20 January 2017)
We consider THE STORM WITHIN to be a “coming of age” album for us.
At this point in our lives (our late teens), we’re not quite children, but we’re not adults either. It’s an awkward time in everyone’s lives at this age. Our other songs are about wanting to break out into your own, reflecting on the past, picking yourself back up after difficult times, dealing with anger in being bullied, and losing the innocence of childhood. Kind of mature topics, but it’s not a downer album. We wanted to express these ideas in a way that everyone can relate to. We’re looking forward to January 21 when it releases!
We were born and raised in the Austin, TX area,
but we also have strong ties to Houston (where our family is from). Austin is often called “the live music capital of the world”, and there’s definitely no shortage of live music here. There are many music festivals throughout the year, and lots of venues and restaurants which host live music just about any given night of the week. Austin’s 6th St. is especially known for live music, and we have both SXSW and Austin City Limits (ACL) each year. We’ve been lucky to have had performed in several Austin sites and festivals, and have had residencies in some great venues.
