Interviewing: Denise Lopez from the duo Catfight

Music business…
It is tough but I love it. Today with social media and it is both easy and hard to reach out. You don’t really need a big label behind you anymore. I have been in the business so long so I have experienced how it was to sell CD´s and the transformation to digital. What drives me is my passion for music.

Pros and cons …
When I left Sony it was a big chance I took. To invest in my own company and do it on my own. I realized that being on a big label gave benefits with radio and TV. But I waited it out and believed in my self. Still we struggle as a small independent label. We own all our rights and no one can ever take that away from us. If a big label would sign us as an act it would only happened it it felt 100% right.

Hurdles and pitfalls…
When we fall we just stand up. I came up with the name of the duo: ‘Catfight’ since we are two cats struggling hard and fight in a male industry. People might think Catfight stand for we fight on stage as two cats. That will never happens. We are two hard working women who stands up for our selfies.

Social media…
We control what we spread.
For me it was taking the step to start to produce. I have been an artist and songwriter and DJ since I was very young. But the next step for me was starting to produce. I have found a way to link all my creativity together in one brand.

Singles vs an album…
It is great! This is my life. I love what I do so I cant wait to spread this new single. Catfight is all about love. We do it all and we can do it just as good as any other male act. Just because we are female it makes it harder for us. We do not stand there in bikinis and press play on Spotify. We want people to like us for our music and technical skills. Not focus on looks.

I would love to have 5 minutes alone with…
Donald Trump and ask him some questions. When he tell the Native Americans to go home. I want to ask him where he will go?

Current and trendy…
I try not focus on that at all. I do what I want to do and follow my own heart and mind.

I am most afraid of…
what we are doing to our world. We need to come together as one nation and fight against all terrorists. We can not let them win!

My personal definition of success is..
When I supported my big hero Michael Jacksson. When I was 8 years old I got the question what my biggest dream was. I said: ‘One day I will support act Michael Jacksson’. The hole class laughed at me. 1997 I did! If no one else believes in me then I DO! Success can be so many things. I have a 4 year old sun. To me success is more then money and a great career. My biggest success is my family and my son, my health and my friends.

My over all goal for my life & career is…
I would love for Catfight to have great success and for us to be able to perform on big festivals all around the world. Spread our goal with our brand and ‘Female Revolution’, travel the world and meet music lovers. Hoping for them to like what we do. In the end I would love to help new female acts to come trough.

3 Ways that I challenge myself to move forward..
1) Believe in my self
2) Set a goal and business plan
3) Work hard and never stop having fun

I have been in the music industry since I was 11 years old..
I started out as a dancer and stepped over to be an artist, songwriter at age 16. I have released 3 albums under my old artist name DeDe signed to Sony Music Sweden and 2 albums under my real name Denise Lopez. Not to confuse me with Denise Lopez in USA who was active during the late 90´s. I was support act to Michael Jackson in Sweden 97 and have sold over 500 000 copies as an artist. I came up with the idea of Catfight – a duo in may 2014. We released our first single august 2014. When I started the duo ‘Catfight’ it was very important to me bring in someone that I could work with close, have faith in, trust and that is a person that work hard to support other female acts. So I asked Jennifer Love my partner in crime and a very close friend. I do all the creative work with the songs as a songwriter, I sing all the songs but we produce together. Live on stage I sing the songs and we DJ together. So we are more then just a dj duo.

Our new single ‘Female Revolution’ is …
written by me Denise Lopez as well as all vocals done by me. The song is about gathering girls together from around the world. We work in a business that is very male dominated. So we want to highlight all the great female acts out there working hard. Our goal is to gather the best producers and acts together on one stage. I have written many songs and for me it is all about inspiration. I travel a lot and I get it while visiting other countries, meetings with people and every day life stories. I write my songs best alone. And this one was written with the music in my ears on a beach. Buy the song: https://itunes.apple.com/se/album/female-revolution-single/id1089906715

To me it is everyday life and I want our fans and listeners to be able to relate. ‘Earthbound’ is about leaving a bad relationship and what saved me from leaving a man who was abusive and had alcohol problems. All my songs have a story behind it.

We both live in Stockholm Sweden…
I was born in Mexico City but my mother is Swedish so I have lived here in Stockholm since the age of 5. We have a great music scene. I have worked with world-class Pop producers and songwriters such as Anders Bagge (Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion), The famous Cheiron Team: Max Martin, Per Magnusson, David Kreuger & Andreas Carlsson (Celine Dion, Britney Spears, n’Sync, Backstreet Boys, Katie Perry among others), Sean Barney Thomas (Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg), Pras Michel (The Fugees) and others.

I love New York, Miami and just get the vibe. Playa Del Carmen in Mexiko where my second home is and Ibiza is great for music lovers. We recorded 2 of our videos there to ‘Earhtbound’ and ‘Your world is mine’.
