GETTING TO KNOW DANIEL POWELL JR – NARCOTICZ
by Jacqueline Jax host of A.V.A Live Radio
The Music Business…
I learned early on that it’s a very political business. Based on my friend fly and from my other friends in the business, BIG L Gruff I see its different now like more of a popularity contest not about talent but like its more cults then movements. I am use to like not with a certain group or their mind state like you looking from out side in like no more trail blazers.
The cons are the scams. So can’t hustle me how people buy views an air time slots an an levels an companies pay Dh to subscribe people like a song even if alright you hear enough becomes the norm.
The pros and cons I have faced is my style and NY brand of music versus just a catchy hook a nursery rhyme. Dumb down words on a track an the hatred of family an friends when they see you pursuing your dream and you gone further. The b them and you don’t need them or their approval.
I’m trying to stay away from…
getting caught with a company that tries to constrict or change your art form. The people that you surround yourself with has an effect on what you create.
Social media…
I sum what of a blessing where you can reach out to people all over the world thru twitter face book band pages all types of music sites where you can promote an interact with people an let them get to know you where as you use have to go local and ask him play your song with you tube an world star you can get exposure as a indie artist.
The challenges…
I had to over come from not reverting back to my old ways of selling drugs make ends meat while i pursue my career from parole to homelessness..
Single versus the album…
With singles you can get a feel for what tracks people gravitate to and build up an anticipation too your album coming with your singles instead just forcing whole thing on the audience. You can feed it to them a little at a time.
I would like to sit down with Ice Cube…
and ask him what really happened with NWA and talk about his political music because that’s the way I am headed as well. I would love to pick his brain on what is in store for me when I go down this roa.
Well music now is so cloned…
same style music lyrics, same trendy hooks, no concept songs where audience don’t know real lyrics like a Nas or a biggie or a pac. The art is four story telling, this music made sell commercials an products no mean ibg music even the r&b. I also sing some light genre party songs.
I am most afraid of nothing…
I only fear the creator Narcoticz has been thru alot from my military service, to jail, to my life on the streets.
My definition of success is…
to be recognize by not only my audience an fans but my peers winning grammys and American Music Awards features in rolling stone an vibe an xxl going round the world an music is recognize an respected making it to rock an roll hall of fame that’s my definition of success.
My goal…
Is to be able to make a good living from my music shows and sell my albums. I want to set a permanent mark on music so when I am dead and gone the name of Narcoticz and my music will still be around playing for years to come.
I challenge myself every day so Narcoticz gets better…
an reinvent my music, an style, an flow, an songs, an singing.. There’s always room for improvement I never rest on my lauras .
I began my music career…
with a friend of my fly reylonds he had a small label called Tech 9 at the time I was living in NYC Harlem. He lived in my building 2289 5th ave riverbend. We knew each other from the streets, I was an artist but I was still developing my style. He brought me in as a s&r manager. I had another friend by the name of Dwyane white from riverbend also same building I grew up with he was ready so I brought him to the company unfortunately things did not work out bit that’s how I got my start and learned from the inside out about the music business.
I even had a walk a&r sesdion for then Columbia island when king just was signed to them. I brought in my boy fly artist Delk who had re-singed on a sony deal to them. The meeting was for my artist, Dwyane white name at time mind binder but he was to scared to show up.
I wrote Street Star when I came out jail in Feb 2015…
it’s about times in my life during the era when I was taking drugs from NYC to sell in Washington DC. The life I use to live and know that’s what this song is about.
What to Narcoticz brings to the table is…
a real gritty life story style of life in the streets up and downs what happens in this life style not to glamorize it but the political side of being in the streets for real. It’s about living it- the woman, the money, the cars being a neighborhood street star is like almost a movie or music star but bigger with a more different reputation. I bring a lyrical bara tone more in depth style a good fella play boy style, that’s what Narcoticz brings to the table.
I live in the city of Philadelphia now West Philly…
to be exact but I am original from NYC Harlem. Where I was born and raised, I moved out here 3 months ago after coming home from jail and was staying in a veterans shelter in queens NYC. I am a gulf war 2 army veteran an couldn’t find housing or an apt in NYC so I came out to Philly an found a 1 bed room apt in West Philly.
