Definition of Success…
Ive recently enjoyed how Lecrae defined success, that its not how Im doing in comparison to others around me, but its how Im doing in comparison to who God created me be. I really like that definition of success.
My success…
One of the shows that we hosted was really a success. We hosted it for two days, and had the venue packed on both days. I think the support blew us away, and our team worked hard and well to pull it off. If we can keep having shows like that, then were going to be successful.
My Goals…
Well there are 4 goals for my career- to make great music, go around the world, generate an income, and get opportunities to speak.
I challenge myself by…
writing songs every week. It’s the best way for me to keep growing in my craft. It keeps me creative, keeps fueled up and keeps me hungry to get better. Also, listening to other artists on CDs and during shows is inspiring.
I am most afraid of…
not being able to come up with good songs. I think the day I can come up with songs is the day I will put down the mic.
I got started…
like every other rapper, copying 2Pac lyrics, and rapping them with friends. Until I was in my teens, trying to write my own rhymes. I started out writing poems for girls and eventually stepped out to perform a song for a variety show at school. Music has had me from there.
Miss Potiphar…
Well I think the song in itself is interesting, in that its probably the only song out there thats saying NO to a Side-Chick. Thats really what the song is about. It’s about a guy who’s at a party having a good time, and this girl, who he knows is in a relationship, tries to make advances at him. And he says a big NO. You don’t get too many songs about that.
Releasing an Album soon…
We are working on our next project, which will really be my first solo project, and my first offering to the music industry. We are going to be pushing it quite strongly online, offline and everywhere we can. I think we will get a bit of local radio air play, with this one, and it should build some good momentum for the projects that will follow.
South Africa…
is a very musical country, and is actually very rich in the arts in general. We like to dance and have a good time, so house music is very popular. Jazz and Gospel are big all over the country. And Hip hop is steadily picking up steam. Some of our biggest artists are really beginning to draw great numbers to their concerts and brands.
The music business…
is a marathon and not a sprint. I think its a very tough business to crack, and there doesn’t seem to be much support. Things are not readily available and easy to access, rather you have to dig and dig hard to make this business work. So the artist who isn’t ready to invest and work on his art doesn’t make it.
Right now, I am learning everything I can, particularly about marketing and the business side of this industry. Thats really where most aspiring artists fail.
Social media…
the best thing about social media is how easily I can be here in South Africa and connect with someone in Miami. It has made the world such a smaller place, and I am so grateful for that. The only challenge is how it can easily run your life if you let it, and if you don’t have a clear purpose for why you want to use it.
Singles…
build better momentum, they are generally your best songs, so they both satisfy the audience and tantalize them for the next release. I think if you build a good strategy around your releases, and if the songs are good, then they can build great momentum for an album and shows.
Music Marketing…
I cant say I have fully mastered this, but I definitely realize the importance of it, and thats why I am studying it now. Without great marketing, even the greatest artists, end up with mediocre results. So I personally have to get great at this. Currently my strategy is in the following steps- good production, aggressive exposure, and music sales and gigs.

Trends can be…
overwhelming if you haven’t taken the time to outline your own strategy, based on your own resources and goals. I also think you have to balance your strategy with different waves that rise within the industry. So it can be tricky, but I think you have to set the pulse for how you are going to grow your business.
Creating music for me…
is largely early in the morning, listening to a beat or groove, and composing songs from there. Then, going back to the guitar and working on the arrangement. The song is usually polished and finished within the band, that where I really get to see what works and what doesn’t.
