Music business…
Mark: we’re in an age where it’s easier than ever to create music and release it to your fan base, however it’s possibly the hardest time to stand out from the crowd as there is no easy way for people to discover you. My personal issue with the current music industry is artists have to do all of the hard work and then pay out for a chance to get their music exposed. I voice my opinion on some of these topics in our new single Transient Investment, written about the idea that once you’ve created all the content yourself, honed your skills and attracted a fan base. Labels come along and make all their money off your hard work.

Social media…
Peter: It’s taken us a long time to get the hang of social media!
Mark: We are just starting to gain some attraction on soundcloud and twitter. I really like soundcloud as it’s the only streamlined site specifically for music and you can get lots of feedback using the groups feature. Twitter is great for contacting radio stations as well as knowing when you’ve been played on a station!

Singles vs an album…
Peter: We, as fans of buying and listen to albums, like to write and release albums although we have been experimenting with remixes and singles to create a regular release strategy. I think the best thing to do is a little bit of both, as you benefit from singles and album.

Mark: I prefer to listen to an album in its entirety as most album take you on a journey and immerse you in that artist’s music. Singles are great for listening to off your iPod or on Spotify when you’re in a rush or discovering a band, but for me albums win.

I would love to have 5 minutes alone with…
Peter: I would love to have 5 minutes alone with Brian May since I’ve always looked up to him as a guitar genius. It would be amazing to find out what it was like recording amazing albums like A Kind Of Magic and The Miracle as well as seeing what makes him tick. Fortunately we were lucky enough to see Queen + Adam Lambert live last year, which I would say is one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to.

Mark: I would love to meet ZZ Top as I grew up listening to their music and they have always been an inspiration to me. They have been the longest running band with no member changes and I’m sure they would have an endless amount of stories to tell.

Balancing Music trends..
Mark: Personally I believe music has become too image orientated to a point where the music can’t speak for itself. I admire artists like Pink Floyd and Daft Punk for not relying on what they look like and focusing on having music that counts.
Peter: In this digital age of infinite possibilities, niche genres are getting so specific the mainstream can’t even penetrate them. However I do think chart music has become quite predictable, particularly here in England. It’s not that the songs are bad, but that the variation in styles is very limited.

I am most afraid of…
Peter: A different band called Yesterday rising to fame before us, as it would leave us in a difficult situation!

My personal definition of success is…
Mark: My definition of successes is to accomplish the goals you set yourself. When we formed this band our goal was to write and record an album. We are now writing and recording our 9th album!

My overall goal for my life & career is…
Peter: To one day create the perfect album, at least in our eyes.
Mark: To enjoy life and hopefully write music that people can relate to. I would love it if there were people who listened to us like I listen to my favorite bands!

3 Ways that I challenge myself …

1) Mark: I do as much as can to stay production and positive every day.

2) Peter: To learn from every mistake and not be afraid to make them.

3) Mark: To take every opportunity I am given.
Peter: Overall I think keeping a positive attitude towards creating music and measuring success is the most important thing, as it helps you get the job done and understand what you want out of it.

In the beginning…
Peter: I have always loved listening to Bands like Queen and ZZ Top form an early age and always dreamed of being able to write, record and play music. Us and a couple of friends from school started thinking about starting a band and eventually we did!

Mark: In 2010 I got a starter drum kit for Christmas and Peter got an Encore Blaster Guitar. From then on we started learning and practicing our instruments, as well as writing songs with the dream of being able to record an album.

Absence of Visible Light…
Peter: I had been listening to a lot of Muse, in particular their new album Drones, which is heavily revolved around politics and dystopian futures. I wanted to write a song with more political undertones and this was around the time of the UK elections, a lot of people seemed to be angry about the elected candidate and their policies, which in turn inspired the song. The name derived from the dark.

Mark: Several songs from our latest album, Hyper Saturated, were recorded for our degree coursework, Absence of Visible Light being one of them. We like to get as much as we can out of the free recording studios at our college and recording our own tracks is a great way for us to enjoy doing that. We record all of our songs as well as mix and master them, it’s a great feeling knowing that you’re 100% in control of your sound.

Making the music…
Mark: it was a problem free session and we got most of the instruments recorded in the first couple of takes, although I can’t say the same for the vocals, which seem to be an endless process!

Peter: We try our best to keep our performances organic on our albums as I think it’s important, especially in Rock, to sound realistic. I would describe our music as a classic rock mentality with a modern approach to production.

Mark: We like to experiment a lot as producers, we aren’t afraid to push the boundaries of rock by using sequencers or synths to enhance some of our recordings.

Kingston…
Peter: We are based in Kingston upon Hull, which is UK city of culture 2017, the music scene is predominantly Dance, Metal and Indie Rock.

Mark: There’s lots of places to see live music, Fruit is great for intimate gigs and there is a festival called Humber Street Sesh on every year celebrating all the performing arts.
