GETTING TO KNOW KRYSTAL

The music…
You can expect deep lyrics about everything from the human/pet bond to a toxic parent/child relationship to feeling abandoned by God. I touch on a lot of different topics on the album. The album is mainly a dance/electronic album with some ambient and world music elements. It was written, arranged and produced by me on a shoestring budget in my bedroom. I hope to provide some fresh topics–something different from the same sex and cheating songs that are already everywhere. I had no confidence in myself and in my own voice. So, the songs were written way before I even dared to open my mouth to sing them! I only recently sang in front of someone else by myself. I needed to get out of my own way, so this album was cathartic for me. I know there is much room for growth and I am open to that…I have been practicing my vocals and production skills and looking at bringing new people on-board to get a fresh approach for the next musical project.

I live in Norfolk, Virginia..
The music scene here is not as vibrant as I would like. We have a few rap artists who are trying to make it and some gospel groups. There are some cover bands that do hard rock. But, the music scene isn’t as “popping” as I would like. I plan on relocating soon. I need a change of scenery!

Music business…
The music industry has changed a lot from the 1990s and early 2000s. You don’t need a record label and super expensive equipment anymore. The dream of getting your music out there is more accessible than at any other time in history. And that is a good thing! Making music is fun and cathartic. So those are the pros. As for cons, the only one I can think of is rejection. It can be hard to get people to want to listen to your music and take the time to buy it because the market is so saturated. The rejection can be a little depressing, but you cannot give up. You’ve got to keep pushing!

Song: Who Are You?
Music Genre : Techno/Dance/Ambient
I was always a weirdo. I never had a lot of friends or boyfriends or whatever. I have always felt like I didn’t fit in. I think that I am somewhere on the asexual or demisexual spectrum to be honest. As for sex, I can take it or leave it. And I need my alone time…I couldn’t have someone in my face 24/7. But, some women act like they just have to have a man with them at all times and if they don’t, they feel inadequate. I don’t feel that way. I don’t feel like I am less mature simply because I am not married and don’t have 2.5 kids.

To be honest with you, I don’t want any kids now and I might not ever want any. And that’s okay. We all have our own paths in life and just because I am different, doesn’t mean that I am less mature or my life is less worthy. We all have our own path in life. It would be so dull if we all were the same. Basically, the song is saying “who are you to make me feel less than you because I have chosen a different path?” And even if I did try to fit in and do things “society’s way”, I am sure someone would complain about that and have so many negative remarks to say. You cannot please ’em all. No matter who you are, someone will love you and someone will hate you. So, just be you.

I would love to have 5 minutes alone with…
the members of Depeche Mode. I love Depeche Mode. They are my favorite band and have been churning out good and meaningful music since before I was born! Their lyrics are always deep and I love the electronic vibe of their music. I would ask them about the songwriting and production process and how to keep things fresh after so many years of being in the business. My favorite songs by them are “Shake the Disease” and “Black Celebration”.
